Color Club’s Route 66

Color Club’s Route 66

I like this color very much…! But the polish formula could use some enhancement. It’s watery and thin, and it doesn’t level out nicely. Two coats didn’t get me even coverage, though it was very very close. I wonder if it would have behaved more with a wide, shaped brush like Sally Hansen, CND, and Zoya have (hey Color Club, wanna get on that?) I have successfully used this color under Hooked - that emphasizes the different...

Emily de Molly’s Goddess of Rays

Emily de Molly’s Goddess of Rays

This isn’t marketed as a multichrome, but I’m definitely getting that vibe. I think this wouldn’t be a good stamping polish, both because of the foil texture and because it’s on the thinner side. I needed three coats for full, even coverage - but once that coverage is in place, the polish doesn’t strongly show brushstrokes or imperfections in the nail.

Colourpop’s Take Me As I Amethyst kit

Colourpop’s Take Me As I Amethyst kit

Flying High was a problematic highlighter - its base was nearly transparent, and most of what was seen was small (not micro, but not too large) glitter particles. Pretty Thing is a cooler red, but it isn’t quite as cool as I had imagined.

Colourpop’s My Perch Or Yours kit

Colourpop’s My Perch Or Yours kit

Colourpop has released a handful of these face-color kits since they introduced the Blush and Lite Stix collections. Most have been a mix of a regular-collection item and an LE shade, or - like Take Me As I Amethyst - two regular colors. This kit contained one Blush Stix and one Lite Stix that were not part of either regular collection. Aviary is your standard blush stick: a sheer medium pink creme, with a little bit of depth and a...

L’Oréal’s Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow in Primped and Precious (507)

L’Oréal’s Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow in Primped and Precious (507)

This shadow and Blinged and Brilliant came out in the same LE release. This is a definite metallic, and I have persistently had problems applying it. Never mind blending it! If I do manage to get it into a place in a way that I like, I don’t touch it again. I have many other silver eyeshadows, of varying depths, that I prefer to work with.

TKB Trading’s Vivid Canary

TKB Trading’s Vivid Canary

Unlike some of TKB’s mattes, this mixes well with water. It’s hard to get the balance right, though: too much and you end up with a shadow that shows any brush strokes, a little less than that and it’s harder to mix. Once applied and dried down, it isn’t the easiest color to blend. I get results I’m happier with if I blend other colors into this one, instead of the other way around. I...

Color Club’s Is Butter A Carb?

Color Club’s Is Butter A Carb?

Color Club does have a lot of these bright-reds. (This looks pink in the bottle, but gains a little depth when applied to my fingernails.) This wasn’t my favorite color from this collection, but that’s because I’m less of a fan of neon or bright pink nail polishes, and I seem to have swatched a lot of those in 2020. The formula is very good, with not a single discontinuity or brushstroke visible in the finished manicure. If...

L’Oréal’s Infallible Pro Last Waterproof Eyeliner in Burgundy

L’Oréal’s Infallible Pro Last Waterproof Eyeliner in Burgundy

Posted on Sunday, at

This color was one of the reasons I was initially interested in this eyeliner collection. While most eyeliner collections since 2013 or thereabouts have included a navy and a grey, burgundy still hasn’t been a standard shade. This doesn’t swatch the loveliest - you can see some thinner spots and patches, because when you try to run the pencil over as-yet-uncured previous applications it just picks that color back up instead of laying down another layer. The application is...

elf’s Lock On Lip Primer

elf’s Lock On Lip Primer

Posted on Saturday, at

When I initially applied this, it did feel just a little bit sticky. Oh good, I thought, this will indeed help my balms and stains and sticks stay on my lips longer! I tested it by applying it to the right half of my mouth, and then applying lip colors to my whole mouth - first to the left side, then to the right. When I tested it with elf’s Sheer Slick Lip Stick in Dragon Fruit, I didn’...

elf’s Studio Fan brush

elf’s Studio Fan brush

Posted on Saturday, at

This is elf’s thinner, softer full fan brush that was pretty much the only kind of fan brush I’d seen in 2010. I will confess, I haven’t yet figured out how to best use it…and I haven’t looked really hard. I can tell you that this has a long black handle and a black metal ferrule, like all of the Studio brushes. (For you folks who only know elf from, say, 2015 onward…there used to only...
